Per oltre 200 generazioni i Nenets hanno attraversato la penisola di Yamal, nell’estremo nord della Siberia, sulla loro rotta migratoria come pastori nomadi di renne.In questo film emerge la bellezza della tundra e lo stile di vita tradizionale del luogo che purtroppo si rivela essere minacciato. Con lo scioglimento dell’Artico, ci si apre a nuove possibilità di sfruttamento del gas che è sempre più importante per l’economia russa, sotto la pressione della comunità internazionale.

Synopsis
For more than 200 generations, the Nenets have crossed the Yamal Peninsula in the far north of Siberia on their migration route as nomadic reindeer herders. The beauty of the tundra and their traditional way of life are revealed in this film. But their way of life is threatened. As the Arctic thaws, it becomes more open to exploitation for gas, which is increasingly important to the Russian economy, under pressure from the international community.

Amnesty International Italia ha deciso di premiare Nenets Vs Gas per aver dato voce al popolo nenet e per aver raccontato una storia che racchiude emblematicamente le questioni che decideranno il nostro futuro: fino a dove abbiamo il diritto di spingerci nello sfruttare le risorse; fino a quando l’ambiente riuscirà a sostenere scelte rapaci; quanto tutto questo impatta con i diritti di chi abita in terre fragili e ricche di risorse.
Nenet Vs Gas rappresenta anche un cinema che ci rende partecipi e consapevoli parlando di vicende altrimenti poco note. E lo fa con puntualità, senza faziosità, lasciando spazio ai protagonisti e raccontando la loro ricerca di alternative e compromessi dignitosi per continuare a esistere onorando le proprie radici, fiduciosi che se le risorse naturali un giorno termineranno, ci sarà ancora terra su cui continuare a vivere secondo le loro millenarie abitudini.

And it does so with punctuality, without bias, leaving space for the protagonists and telling their search for dignified alternatives and compromises to continue existing while honoring their roots, confident that if natural resources one day run out, there will still be land to continue living according to their millennia-old habits.
