Sinossi: Agadez, 2021. Dopo il divieto di trasporto illegale di migranti davparte del governo del Niger, quattro ex traffi canti lottano pervguadagnarsi da vivere e intraprendono un viaggio attraverso il
Sahara. Tra speranze e disillusioni, questi uomini lottano pervsopravvivere in un ambiente sempre più ostile e instabile.

Dopo aver conseguito un Master in Relazioni Internazionali presso l’IHEID di Ginevra, ha diretto il suo primo cortometraggio documentario, BABOR CASANOVA (aggio di Clermont-Ferrand. Il suo primo lungometraggio OF SHEEP AND MEN (2017) è stato presentato in anteprima al TIFF DOCS e ha vinto il Prix de Soleure 2018. MY ENGLISH COUSIN è stato presentato in anteprima anche al TIFF DOCS.

After earning avMaster’s degree in International Relations from Geneva’s IHEID,vhe directed his fi rst short documentary fi lm, BABOR CASANOVA (2015). It was awarded at doclisboa, Festival dei Popoli, and at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival among others.
His fi rst feature-length fi lm OF SHEEP AND MEN (2017) premiered within TIFF DOCS, and won the Prix de Soleure 2018. MY ENGLISH COUSIN also premiered in TIFF DOCS.

Nel film di Karim Sayad è l’unico punto di contatto con la realtà di alcuni trafficanti di esseri umani sulla frontiera indefinita tra Niger e Libia, uno scenario da fantascienza al tempo stesso visione apocalittica di un mondo in cui tutti potremmo ritrovarci a camminare. Il punto di vista è ribaltato: i trafficanti non possono più decidere della vita degli altri e, anzi, non sono padroni nemmeno del loro destino. Questi uomini disperati scommettono su una risorsa che da sempre rappresenta ricchezza e desiderio. 

La loro surreale corsa all’oro tra le sabbie del deserto interpella lo spettatore sulla sopravvivenza dell’umanità in un pianeta esausto.

2G in communication terms, represents the minimal signal condition required for a message to reach its destination. In Karim Sayad’s film, it is the only point of contact with reality for some human traffickers on the vague border between Niger and Libya—a sci-fi scenario that is simultaneously an apocalyptic vision of a world where any of us might find ourselves walking.

The perspective is reversed: the traffickers can no longer decide the fate of others, and indeed, they are not even masters of their own destiny. These desperate men gamble on a resource that has always symbolized wealth and desire. Their surreal gold rush in the desert sands challenges the audience to reflect on the survival of humanity on an exhausted planet.
